Profiles

Otis

Name: Otis Bugbee
Age: 18

Where I am from: I am from the small town of North Andover. I have lived there most of my life except for a small time when I lived in Ireland when I was a young baby.

School: I graduated from a small private family owned school called The Clark school in Rowley Massachusetts. It was a tight knit group of students and teachers where everyone was willing to help with whatever problems you encountered.

Long-term Plan: I plan on going to a community college then transferring to a different college later to complete a four year degree.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: Unity Radio will help me with work experience as well as hopefully some camera experience so that way i can be more confident behind a camera. I also hope to learn all of the production behind the scenes because i think that could greatly help me in my future endeavors.

Hobbies: My hobbies include playing creative video games, and concert photography. I got into concert photography through my father who has a few connections with bands and crew. I find it very fun and interesting as well as a good bonding time with my father. I have even helped out with some of his photo shoots including an offstage shoot of OM before they played as well as for a small politician running in Maine.

Quinlan Day
Age: 18

Where I Am From: I’ve lived right outside of Philadelphia for most of my life. I spent three years living outside of Pittsburgh, but Philadelphia will always be my home. Fly Eagles Fly.

School: I spent my highschool going to The Haverford School, a private all boys school located in Bryn Mawr, PA. I’m majoring in Physics and Psychology at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York fall of 2021.

Long Term Plans: I plan on pursuing a doctorate from RIT in either Physics or Psychology, if I’m being honest the only reason I’m doing both is because I can’t decide, and I might as well take as many classes as I can since I pay for semesters not classes. I tend to not plan for the future and mostly go with the flow. Right now I have no plans besides “graduate college”.

How Unity Radio Can Help Me Achieve My Goals: When I go to RIT in the fall, I want to create my own radio station. My dad made a radio station when he went to Bates college in Maine during the late 1980s, and ever since I was born he has talked about how amazing it was. I want to create that experience for myself and also to share underground music with the city of Rochester. A lot of underground musicians I believe to be the greatest creative minds of our recent history, and were completely unheard of for far too long. I also want to give a voice to the community, and create a sense of belonging and calmness for any college student that listens to my station.

Hobbies: In my free time I listen to podcasts, or play the drums on my drum kit back at home. Outside of music I’m a photographer, I love to read, and I cook as often as I can.

My name is Eli Swan. I’m 19 years old. I was raised in Wellesley which is about fifteen minutes outside of Boston. I love listening to and playing music as well as producing and photography. My Dad had me listening to the Beatles and The Rolling Stones since I was a baby and I love exploring different genres and discovering new artists. I have three years of production classes behind my belt as well as six years on guitar.

Age: 21

Where I am from: Born in Boston, my family moved me and my brother to North Attleboro and then later Northboro Mass. Being from Northboro made me familiar with Worcester and it gave me a good chance to live close to a city other than Boston.

School: I graduated from Algonquin Regional High School in 2017 and found my interests the more I grew throughout high school. Playing two sports my time was consumed with weight training and practice but by my senior year I was over sports. I knew I wasn’t going professional and my focus turned to music and audio. I started playing guitar my sophomore year and with piano lessons my senior year, all I really did was play music in my final year of high school.

Long-term Plan: My long-term goal is just to do what I love really. I love being a part of a team and working with motivated people to accomplish a task. Whether that be a small audio project or a large scale film project, I know my skills can help contribute to a larger goal. For now, I am trying to learn as much as possible about audio engineering, audio producing, radio production, podcast production and storytelling, film editing, and scripting. And by doing that I know I will be able to find work and find my plan.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: Unity Radio is really a great spot to be with what I am interested in. There are aspects to Unity Radio that play to my strengths and then there are other aspects in which I’m not as strong in and in which I hope to improve in. My goal to learn as much as possible can be achieved through Unity Radios help.

Hobbies: Besides playing sports and hanging out with friends I really love making and listening to music. Music has helped through a number of different scenarios and it continues to help in my life. Making music on the other hand is something that I love to do and will do for the rest of my life. Besides that I love to socialize and watch shows and movies. I took part in the drama club in high school and had several performances that were mostly improv-based and that was a lot of fun. But I just love being a part of a production whether I’m front and center or whether I’m behind the scenes I’ve grown to love the many aspects that are involved in show production.

Co-Host-Youth Views

My name is Jack. I'm 20 years old and was born in Worcester MA. I went to school at Flagg Street School for elementary, Forest Grove for middle school, and St. John's for high school. I'm currently attending UMass Amherst remotely as a Political Science Major and possibly double major in Communications.

Unity Radio and the show "Youth Views" is such a great opportunity for me to have a platform to express my political beliefs while gaining perspective of others and finding common ground. Articulating the things we disagree about politically is what keeps our show going as we analyze the news cycle on a local and federal level.

LONG TERM: I love following and being active in politics, and volunteered for various campaigns from the city council to presidential level. My career goals involve being a lawyer, social worker, or professor who eventually runs for office.

Age: I was born October 18th, 2000

Where I am From: I was raised in Worcester Massachusetts for most of my life. I live with my mother, my stepdad and my 3 younger siblings but in all I have 2 blood sisters 1 younger, 1 older and 1 foster sister, 2 older brothers and 1 younger brother.

Where I went to school: I went to South Community High School but dropped out my junior year because I felt school just wasn’t the right learning environment for me. So I pursued my HiSet so I can at least have something to show for my education and give myself a chance to go further with my life.

Longterm Plan: I have a deep passion for music all around. I really started getting deep into it at the age of 8 at the Boys and Girls Club, where I joined what started as the Beat Team, and later became The Young Royals, all directed by my mentor, Keith “K-Fingers” Chester. He also introduced me to the engineering side in the recording studio where pro tools and I immediately felt at home. Around the same time is when I was introduced Sir Ernest Floyd over at Becker college, where he has running the Unity Radio online podcast and I was determined to establish a studio there from the jump. But I was so young at the time and didn’t really have the idea of commitment, so I could never really be as consistent as I wanted to, but now I feel I’ve really grasped the concept and am ready to give the Unity Team my all.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: I am grateful to now be given the opportunity to run the new and developing Unity Studios as the Audio Engineering Manager and I look forward to a long successful future with everyone.

Name: Antonio "Cookie" Calderon

Age: 20

Where am I from?: Worcester, MA

School: I graduated from Claremont Academy Class of 2019

Long Term Plan: I’ve liked music for as long as I could remember but I also like drawing and creating art. My first aspirations were to do something with my drawing ability like become a children’s book illustrator. However over the years it became hazy on what I really wanted to do and I stuck with that for a while. At 14 years old is when I really started getting to making music. I wasn’t serious at all about it and just wanted to see what I could make in terms of musical art. I became infatuated with making new raps, because I loved the feeling it gave me when I sat back to look at it as a whole
And it came together into somethin that I could be proud of. I got more serious about it probably around my sophomore an junior years so like 16, 17 years old and I was just makin tracks in my room all the time, recording stuff on my phone in my closet, thinking every song that came out was a hit.  In contrast to that when I started putting stuff out, and not blowing up, I was confused almost that I didn’t. It pushed me to want to go harder and to do more and more songs to improve my craft. Through that process I found out that this is something I’m really interested in and wouldn’t mind spending my time on. Still haven’t blew up but now I know, this like anything else you want to be good at or excel in, is a process. Even if the progress doesn’t reveal itself right away. In the long term I know I’m doin what I could do to try an make that happen.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: All in all I feel like meeting the people at unity and helping out there Is showing me the behind the scenes of what a career in media is all about. I could say with confidence that Unity Radio is the best step I’ve takin towards my new life in this field.

Hobbies: Drawing, Poetry and Rapping

Long-term Plan: I'm still not sure what i want to do. My main plan is to be a Producer/ Music Engineer, but I am also interested in doing photography, and video editing.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: I feel like Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals because All the staff and volunteers are there to support you, even when falling down they pick you back up. I don’t see unity radio just as a job, but also as family.

Hobbies: My Favorite hobby is to make music because playing melodies and chords clears my mind and puts me in a good mind state. When I am bored my other hobbies is to watching movies to get some laughs out, and playing Games just to have fun.

Spencer Cook

Name: Spencer Cook

Age: 18

Where I am from: I come from way out west in the fabled land of California. I’ve lived my entire life in Mountain View, a city in the Bay Area about 10 miles west of San Jose and 35 miles south of San Francisco.

School: I graduated from Mountain View High School in June 2020. I concurrently graduated from Freestyle Academy of Communication Arts and Technology, a 2 year program in which I took a film production elective, learning how to use a plethora of professional-grade programs along with hands-on filmmaking skills and experience. I’m currently enrolled at The University of Vermont, starting in fall 2021.

Long-term Plan: I have yet to decide upon a concrete plan for my future. I opted to take a gap year when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I am currently interning through the Dynamy Internship Program. While I am uncertain about my long-term plan, I have extensive experience in theatre on both the acting and technical fronts, as well as an amateur grasp on filmmaking, and I am leaving the door open for careers in those fields. As someone who thrives in writing and storytelling, I love combining my artistic side with my technical experience, and hope to pursue a career where I can utilize both together.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: With Unity Radio I’ve been able to use my skills in both theatre and film and put them to good use. I’ve built off my experience in stage management with audio mixing and operation of the show, as well as my film experience with camerawork and lighting. Adapting my skills into a new field has helped me open doors for my future as well as gain experience working a regular job.

Hobbies: As mentioned earlier, one of my hobbies throughout middle and high school was theatre— I performed in a ridiculous number of shows throughout the years and worked tech on a considerable amount as well. As a more casual hobby, I’ve been a train enthusiast and a roller coaster enthusiast for a long while. In recent years I’ve picked up collecting CDs and listening to various bands, which I especially enjoy doing while wasting hours on a jigsaw puzzle. Music has been the most important therapeutic outlet that helped me through all of high school, and over quarantine I taught myself music theory and how to play the keyboard, which is how I kill time nowadays.

Age: 16, Sophomore

Where am I from: I grew up in North-Eastern China in a city called Shenyang. The city itself is pretty big with a population of almost 8 million. To give you a general idea of where its located; it is like Boston in America, and roughly 6 hours drive Northeast of Beijing.

School: I came to American to attend high school at Bancroft School North of Worcester. Not that I was unsatisfied with my old school, I believe that in America, I will have more chances to achieve who I imagine myself to be when I was five. LIVING THE AMERICAN DREAM! I never thought that I could have the honor and chance to work in an actual radio studio and it has already given me so much knowledge and interest.

Long-term Plan: Many might say that it is too early to consider life in high school, but how many more waited after graduating college and still no knowing what their interests are and where their future will unfold. To me, I have always always always been a great fan of movies (especially Star Wars), old, new, I’m open to all. My dream job would be to work on an actual movie set, and maybe even have a simple role in the movie.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: One of the biggest attractions of the job other than its relatability to my dream job of working on a production site, is that I get to meet a lot of people. Writers, speakers, directors, politicians, people from the Worcester government, and lots of others from the community. My goal is to get to know these people and through their network or even themselves, they can help make my career so much easier. It can never hurt to have friends. Without the help of Unity Radio, such a network can never be formed.

Hobbies: Just like I mentioned, I love watching movies, mainly the real classic ones from the 80s and 90s. I do play some games as well, but only when I’m done with my work, cause I feel really guilty when leaving work behind to play. Sportswise, I am a golfer and swimmer for my school varsity teams. I do try to go to the YMCA during weekends to put in some extra practice on my own but definitely not during this crazy Corona time. One other note is that I have beginning to love reading books (that’s right, used to hate them so much). Aside from the school requirements, I joined a book club trying to make me read more instead of facing a tiny screen all day. My most recent finished is a novel called A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, and I am working on a Star Wars spin-off novel about Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Where am I from: Born and raised in Orinda, California (Bay Area).

School: I graduated from Campolindo High School in May of 2020. I am currently taking a gap year and have deferred from Berklee College of Music to Fall of 2021.

Future Plans: I am singer/songwriter/musician, and I hope to pursue a career in the music industry. I have yet to decide what specific area, however, some career paths that interest me include music therapy, music education, music business, and songwriting.

How Unity can help me achieve my goals: I have a strong passion for making music, however, I lack the technical skills necessary to record and/or produce my own music. Unity Radio has not only introduced me to the basics of audio engineering, but has also allowed me to network with other aspiring musicians like myself. This will hopefully prepare me for my education at Berklee and my future music endeavors.

Hobbies: I love listening to music, hiking, writing, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.

 Jorge “DJ Meese” Calderon

Age: 20 yrs old

Where I’m From: I am new to Worcester, born and raised in Lawrence Mass.

School: I graduated from North Andover High School in 2018.

Long Term Plan: I plan to open up my own clothing store with my own designer brand and to own a nightclub, building my brand as a dj. I was initially interested in Barbering but DJing swept me from my feet. My earliest memory of having a genuine love for music was listening to Big Pun C.D.’s on my father’s boombox. I dabbled in writing and rapping immersing myself in music. Eventually I found joy in DJing because I wanted to share that feeling I got with the music I liked with others and be the one to set the tone of the party. I started off with basic house and basement parties but eventually I realized that was not going to get me anywhere. Some things that prevented me from reaching my goals sooner in life have been gang violence and getting in trouble with law enforcement. As a teen I was misled and attracted to the easy way of doing things to get what I wanted but I realized I wanted more out of life and to be genuinely successful. Down the line, I found myself working with an old time friend / producer and he plugged me into Unity Radio where I happily reside at the moment.

How Unity Radio can help me achieve my goals: Unity Radio keeps me busy and helps me to focus on my goals of making a career in the music industry. I am currently focused on mixing tracks and practicing to better my craft. I can’t stay in one spot too long, so when I need to take a break from mixing music, I love to jump in and lend a hand where needed. Unity Radio provides me with a safe space and the necessary equipment to do just that. I am also learning new skills such as production assistance, audio and video production - engineering and editing. Unity Radio has also opened many doors in Networking and expanding my connections to people in the city who can help me achieve my goals. I am very ambitious and motivated to see a future come to reality above and beyond Unity Radio with my passion and learned skills in music and DJing. In 5 years I see myself being a household name through persistence, hard work, dedication and perseverance.

Hobbies: Outside of music, I like to play basketball, try new restaurants, and travel.

Age: 19

Where Am I From: I am from the big apple, New York City, and I have lived there my whole life. I've lived in three different neighborhoods while living in the city. The city is full of action packed adventures and has shaped where I have lived.

School: I went to high school at a small private school called Birch Wathen Lenox for four years. The school pushed me in many ways and helped get to where I am today. I graduated last year and I am going to be going to Muhlenberg College. I have learned life lessons from school that I can take with me into my future endeavors.

Future Plans: For the future, I plan to become a touring musician. My current artist name is Tobyt and I am on all major streaming platforms. I plan to travel the world and see it in any way I can. I also intend to live in New York for my entire life, and absorb as much about music as possible. I want to be an independent artist and work with other artists. On the side I would create an animal shelter to help pets that are in need. I want to give back to the community and this is how I can do that in the best way possible. Overall, I just want to live my dream as a touring musician and help animals in need.

How Unity Radio Helps Me Achieve My Goals: Unity Radio will help me achieve my goals by helping gain connections with people who have the same interests as me. They will also help me by learning about sound engineering and to help mix and master the audio from the shows. Unity will also give me a window of what is happening in the community and this will give me a window of what pets are in need. People of all kinds come into the station and they can teach me how they approach giving their impact on the community. All in all, Unity will help me achieve my goals by helping me sound engineer and give me connections I could not find anywhere else.

Hobbies: In my free time I like to make music on my own and with my friends. I also like to read comics, particularly Marvel comics, thanks to my roommate at Dynamy. I like to watch Netflix from time to time as well. The shows I like to watch are YouStranger Things, and Atypical. I like to hangout with friends and go on adventures as well. All in all, these are the interests I bring to the table.

Age: 17

Where Am I From: I was born in Ghana, then came to the US when I was around 5 years old. I lived in the Southwest side of Worcester on Merchant Street next to Sullivan for a couple of years, then my family moved up near Forest Grove.

In college, I think I will study Economics and Computer Science with a potential minor in Biotechnology. From there, I want to pursue further education in either Business school or Law school. Ultimately, I just want to maximize my potential as a person both socially and intellectually. If I’m fortunate enough to be able to provide for my family and retire early, I want to venture into philanthropic work, specifically in addressing the disparities in public education and prison recidivism.

How Unity Radio Helps Me Achieve My Goals: Working at Unity allows me to observe and develop the networking and communication skills necessary to develop strong relationships and skilled teams that accomplish what you set out to do. Unity Radio gives me inspiration for what I can do in the future but also for what I can do right now at just 17 years old. My experience at Unity Radio has helped me cultivate my own language and thinking skills so that I can effectively articulate ideas and persuade people which is crucial for the future leader and businessman I aspire to become.

Hobbies: I enjoy solving Rubik's cubes, listening to TED talks and podcasts like How I Built This, and reading Malcolm Gladwell's books. I’m also the varsity captain for Powerlifting and Cross Country which keeps me active.
